I Love Thrifting Off Season!

Hey my fellow thriftanistas sorry this post is so late in the evening. It’s been a very busy day. Let me ask you all a question. Do you thrift off-season???? I do and I LOVE IT. I have thrifted some of my greatest treasures when I shop off-season. I shop this way for 2 reasons. First even in resale off-season clothing seems to be priced cheaper. The second reason is that I am easily able to scoop up the fabulous off-season fashions because most shoppers are looking for things to wear right now. With that in mind a few weeks ago I decided I would not thrift anymore summer fashions. It’s only so many summer dresses one can have and I have A LOT. So instead on my most recent thrifting adventures I have been looking to get some fabulous fall finds. My latest excursion took me to one of my favorite Salvation Army’s. One thing to note about the Salvation Army is that each week they have 1 color ticket half off. This weeks 50% ticket is tan. I stepped in the store got my cart and let the hunt begin. I love this Salvation because they price most of their merchandise very  reasonably. To make a long story short I bought 2 coats, 1 jacket, and 4 dresses for a total of $13.10. Needless to say I had an awesome thrifting day. I could have gotten much more but I TRY to pace myself ;). Check out the pictures below to see my amazing fall finds.

I Have a Confession: I Thrift for Gifts

Hey my fellow thriftanistas HAPPY HUMP DAY.  This will be another short post as I have my 3-year-old busy body with me today. Hopefully if I run him around enough doing mommy’s errands he will come home and take a LONGGGGGGGGGGGG nap. Any-who I come before you today to CONFESS ALL MY SINS. Okay I have to laugh at myself because I sound so EXTRA dramatic. I can almost hear the dun, dun, dun like they have in suspense thrillers. My confession is not really that dramatic but some people may not agree with it. Are you ready, hear it comes……… I THRIFT FOR GIFTS. Yes you read that correctly, I give people thrifted items as gifts. Now before those non-thrifers go in on me, let me explain. Shopping thrift allows me to own the best items at phenomenal, rock bottom prices. I must also add that I am very good at what I do, I DON’T BUY JUNK.  Example while out thrifting yesterday I came across a cute pair of Salvatore Ferragamo cream and black patent leather slingback shoes. I saw them and immediately thought of my aunt. I remembered that my children and I had yet to give her something for mother’s day and I knew that these shoes would make the perfect gift. She LOVES nice things. Now with my very limited single mama bank account I could never afford to buy her a gift as nice as this. However through the magic of thrifting I was able to give her a pair of shoes that could have easily been $300 or $400 for $6.99. I can definitely afford $6.99. Now don’t get me wrong I don’t do this with everyone. I respect the fact that some people just don’t like secondhand merchandise. Those people although I love them get the CHEAP ASS gifts I can afford. However people like my aunt who is one of my fashion icons get the best my THRIFTY EYE can find. She is a thrifter and a Michigan Avenue shopper so she definitely understood the value of her gift. I don’t know if I ever told you all but I come from a long line of smart thrifty women. If I haven’t convinced you of the value in thrifting for gifts that’s okay. Just know that on your next birthday your gift from me is coming from WALMART. Oh and your budget is $6.99 too, which is about equivalent to a pack of underwear. FERRAGAMO’S or UNDERWEAR…….. you decide!

Until next time my fellow thriftanistas smooches,

I Stole a Man’s “VIRGINITY”………Read Below!

Hey my fellow thriftanistas happy Thursday. I hope you are having an absolutely amazing week. My week has been pretty damn great so far. On Tuesday I took a brand new client on my one on one Thrift In The City Chicago Shopping Tour. Did I mention said client was a man? Did I also mention he was a “THRIFTING VIRGIN”? I know right a man that’s a “VIRGIN” go figure. Needless to say I was super excited to take him on his first foray into my world. It brings me so much joy when I can expose someone to the benefits of thrifting. I think it was especially exciting because often times men are under the misconception that thrift stores don’t have anything for them. I was more than happy to dispel that myth for him. We went to 2 different stores and I gave him a thrift 101 lesson. Many people don’t realize that there is an art to thrifting. If you are a novice you could get lost, overwhelmed and spend waaaaaayyyyyyyy to much money. This is where I come in. I walk people through the rules of thrifting and show them how to maximize their money. Even in a thrift store you want to get the most bang for your buck. However I digress, back to my client. He was truly amazed by all of the great things we found to complement his existing wardrobe. He could not believe they had so many name-brand items at those phenomenal prices. In the end we bought 11 shirts, 4 pair of jeans, 2 pair of black slacks and 3 suit jackets for a grand total of $50.00. That is less than the price of one pair of jeans. Needless to say he now has the thrifting bug. His excitement gave me my thrifting fix for the day. I must say it’s been a long time since I was a man’s first lol. I popped that thrifting cherry and am proud of it. I was gentle with him though :). In the end it was a wonderful experience for us both. Pictures of his fabulous new wardrobe and his testimonial coming soon.

Do You Shop Off-Season????

For me shopping off-season is one of the best ways to shop. It allows me to get FABULOUS fashions for next year at rock bottom prices.  In order for stores to make room for Spring and Summer merchandise the winter fashions MUST GO. With Spring fast approaching  now is the time to take advantage of the great clearance sales going on in your local stores. You can also find some great winter blow outs online. Now I am sure you are thinking wait I can’t believe THE THRIFTY FASHIONISTA has not mentioned thrifting . Well if  you have been reading my blog you know I don’t ever post anything that doesn’t talk about THRIFTING. So here we go! I was recently asked the questions “do thrift stores have winter clearance sales too?”. The answer to this question is YES. Thrift stores like other retail stores are trying to transition to their spring and summer merchandise, so winter items MUST GO.  Just the other day I took advantage of Unique Thrift Stores $10.00 winter bag sale. How the sale worked is that when you came into Unique Thrift Store they gave you one of their large bags. You could fill the bag up with any winter coats, sweaters, scarves, hats and boots. You had to fit as much as you could in the bag without it tearing and the cashier had to be able to close it.  Then you took it to the register and the whole bag was $10.00. Yes I said it $10.00 for everything in the bag. HOW CAN YOU BEAT THAT? I got some fabulous things and am well on my way to having  next years HOTT winter wardrobe. Now if your thinking,  how do you know that stuff will even be in style next year? I don’t…….. but I don’t CARE, I bought what I LIKE. I create my own STYLE. Besides from season to season fashion may have a few major new trends but a lot of staple items stay the same. You all are probably shaking your head at the computer thinking “it is warm so I don’t want to shop for winter clothes. However you have to trust THE THRIFTY FASHIONISTA these are some sales you don’t want to miss. Check out my video below to see what fabulous things I found at the winter bag sale. I hope it inspires you to do a little WINTER shopping of your own. Until next time my Thriftanistas.

The Look for Less: Red Carpet Edition

Happy hump day my fellow thriftanistas. I am going to keep today’s post short and sweet. Awards season has just ended and although I don’t really watch all the shows I definitely keep up with the FASHIONS. There were some absolutely gorgeous gowns on the red carpet this year. On the flip side there were some monstrosities that made me want to go ask the stylist what the HELL where you thinking???? Okay but I digress back to the fabulous. One of my favorite looks of the 2012 awards season was Viola Davis in that beautiful green Vera Wang mermaid gown. She looked regal, beautiful, flawless and I LOVED that she rocked her natural hair. If it sounds like I am gushing over this women……… it’s because I AM. I think she represented true HOLLYWOOD glamour. Which brings me to my look of the day. I gave myself a CHALLENGE. I wanted to see if I could put together a Red Carpet ready look for $10.00 or less. I wanted a bright beautiful color like Mrs. Davis and was even inspired to start fresh and rock my natural hair. Watch the video below to see how I got red carpet ready for $8.35+ tax. Tell me what you think. I would also love to hear what your favorite red carpet look was from this season.

Todays Fashion Are Hot No Doubt……..But a Vintage Look Will Make You Really Stand Out!!

All fashion repeats itself. There may be small variations but I would venture to say that 98% of today’s fashions originated with a fabulous look from the past. The thing that I truly love about wearing vintage clothing is that it allows me to be UNIQUE. I don’t have to worry about seeing my look over and over again because there isn’t carbon copies of the items in every store. Don’t get me wrong I love SOME (not all) current trends  but every now and then I get really inspired to rock a hot vintage look. While other times I may wear something current and just add a fabulous vintage piece to the mix (brooch, purse, jacket, necklace, etc). You know as John Witherspoon said in Boomerang “you’ve got to cooooooorrrrrdinate”. With spring just around the corner, I decided to see what new and fabulous vintage looks I could create. You know I’ll have to be able to style and profile in the warm weather months. Check out my Vintage Style: 101 video to see some of the fabulous vintage pieces I own and how I put them together. I hope the video inspires you to add a little vintage to your wardrobe. I’m sure I don’t need to give this disclaimer but I will anyway. EVERYTHING IS THRIFTED!!!!! I’m the Thrifty Fashionista so I’m sure you expected nothing less.

How is this for VINTAGE??? Summer here I come!

P.S. Check out a fellow fashionista, customer and friend who can really rock a vintage look.

You Go Miss V.

The Valentines Day Dollar Holla!!!! What Can You Buy for a $1.00

Roses are red, violets are blue I had a fabulous Valentines Day, how about you? Okay I know that Valentines Day was a couple of days ago but my computer put me on punishment and wouldn’t allow me to talk to you guys and gals (it was acting CRAZY). Any-who for me Valentines Day means spending time with the ones you love most and doing what makes you happy. This V-Day I did both. I spent the evening with the loves of my life (my babies) and the earlier part of the day doing what I love. Can you guess what that is? I will give you a hint, it’s starts with a thr and ends with an ift. If you guessed thrift you would be correct. Vanna tell them what they won, a new ……………. just kidding. On Tuesday one of my favorite thrift store chains had a fantabulous (spell check says this is a made up word) Valentines Day sale. The sale was $1.00 for anything red, pink or with hearts. Yes I said it $1.00. That can be $1.00 bill, 4 quarters, 10 dimes, 20 nickles or 100 pennies. Anyway you slice it you can’t beat a “dollar holla”. I dropped my kids off at school that morning and was off to have some V-day fun.I got to the thrift store at about 9:15 a.m. and headed straight for the coat aisle. Take note one of the major rules I use when shopping a sale like this one is to get as much bang for my buck as possible. What this means is that instead of getting the $5.99 shirt for a $1.00, I go for the $29.99 coat for that very same $1.00. There is a much greater value in getting the higher priced item for a $1.00. Anyway back to the coat aisle. I found 11 amazing coats and jackets for a grand total of $11.00. I also found 3 pair of cute pants. My Valentines Day was off to a great start and this was just the beginning. I visited 2 other stores 0n my Valentines Day journey. In total I bought 23 items that would have retailed for $329.27  and I only spent $23.00 plus tax. How can you beat it??? I bought to many items to show all the pictures so I created my first thrift haul video. Please click the link below to watch the video. It was my first video so please be kind. Make a girl feel good about herself. All in all I would have to say that I had a wonderful Valentines Day. I spent time with my first, second and third loves (my daughter, my son and thrifting)……..ain’t love GRAND!

Smooches,

The Thrifty Fashionista

P.S.  Sorry the video is a little dark but my camera was in cahoots with my computer (acting CRAZY).
